Default Slicks

I have a 72 Convertible LT1 and a 74 Nova (bought by my mom and dad brand new). I havent raced the old Nova in about 5 years. Since then I bought my vette, but I cant fight the urge to get the Nova out and race the two. It ran 13.20's with a 3.08 open rear end on street tires when I used to race it back in high school and early college. Since then I put in a mean 350 (dynoed at 405 HP and 465 Ft/lbs) and a posi 342 rear end. The 72 does not have the original LT1, but has quite a powerful and smooth running 350 in it, backed by the M21. I know it will be no match for the column shifted bench seat Nova, but I want to see what it can do. Being a new vette owner, I lack proper knowlege of what the 90,000 mile IRS is capable of handling and I dont want to break my vette. Should I be worried about the IRS at the track? I also want to buy a set of slicks that could fit both cars and was wondering if anyone knows what size and brand would work well for both cars. Thanks for your continued help. :flag

I run hoosier 28"x9"slicks with a3.70 gear,with your gears you might want a little shorter tire,maybe a 26".

What rear end ratio do you have? If 3.36 or 3.55 or less keep tires around 26". If you don't want to break anything you might not want to use slicks and slid it a little.

Hi vetterATL,

My 82' with aluminum carrier has held up very well in a fairly hard launching automatic. Your IRS should be tougher than mine but you do have a stick car. I had to rebuild the rear end after 1000+ passes but that was to be expected. The only thing that ever broke at the track was a u-joint. I'd make sure yours are in good shape before dumping the clutch on a good set of slicks!

I've been very happy with my Mickey Thompson ET Drag slicks. Up until last year I ran 26" X 10" tires on 8½" wheels. These would work good on your vette. I think you may have back spacing problems trying to use the same wheels on both cars.

Good luck, you have a couple cool cars!

Thanks for the help, I hope I can find a backspacing that will work for both.

Beware some tracks will only let you run 14.00 or slower with the soft top. You should eb faster than that with slicks. I had to get a hardtop for mine to run. I am now good to 12.00. Not there yet but getting closer. I would change out the ujoints. If everything else is in good shape you should be OK. But with slicks you never know. I hope to try some drag radials as this will give a little more than slicks.
