It is the standard GM Goodwrench engine. It has been used by a couple of people in their cars. It is reliable, but under powered and not made of the strongest components.
Chevy High performance did a series of articles on this engine and the mods they did to it. They basically put a Com XE268 cam,Vortec heads and headers and made nearly 400 hp with it.
It does have a cast crank, and there has been some negative coments on the quality of the construction.
If the 3 year warranty is important to you then it is probably a good choice for a weekend cruiser. If you want more power, check out the 330HP, which is basically the same engine with Vortec heads and a fairly mild cam.
forget about LM1 or L48, what you have is a chevy 350. For something like $600.00 you can get a 383 kit with a new crank, rods and pistons. With about $300.00 in basic machining and $100.00 for balancing you could have a good stroker bottom end. For $650.00 you can get a set of 2.02 Torquers. Slap a $100.00 worth of basic port work and they're pretty good heads. You already have the basics in your L48. Why not just rebuild it to your desired outcome. A ZZ3 will easily be more expensive than making a decent 383 out of your motor.
As far as converting my L48 to have more HP, I have to be concerned with keeping it withing Legal Emission limits in PA. Can I do those mods and still keep it legal for emissions?

They are just one of many selling these things, in fact you can probably order just about any of these engines from a GM dealer. Your local Chevy parts guy might make you a deal.
What is the model name/number for the 330HP you're talking about? I'd like to try to find info on it on the web.
Also, if you had the choice between the LM1 or rebuilding the L48 for the same cost, what you you do?
Thanks!
GM's part number for the 330/350 is 12486041 - it can be found at Pace Chevy's website http://paceparts.com/
Bubba makes a good point, if you have the time, inclination and ability you can build a motor that will easily compete, or surpass, with the crates. The beauty of the crates is:
1) a warantee
2) weekend swap (no time spent rebuilding)
3)excellent chance of success (i.e. motor not grenading on you while you break in cam)
