i'll try and explain my question as best as i can. hopefully someone can help me out. i got a 77 vette that i've been having trouble with. (1) my battery keeps dying on me. i replaced the alternator yet it still dies. nothing is left on likie lights when its turned off, but 1 day when i messed with the radio, my gauges had stopped working so i had to move the bezel until the gauges started working. seems that the previous owner had an electric tech work on it and just put electrical tape. could this be the problem fot the battery being drained? (2) i took my battery to get charged when i connected it when i got it started it, turned off. naturally i thought because the engine was cold. so i reved it till it warmed up but then it started to sputter and there was oil on the ground seemed to be transmission couldnt tell cus it was dark but i checked the fluid and it was low. plus while it was sputtering the driver side tailpipe was throwing out smoke not alot but noticeable. so i checked the engine and i noticed oil on the driver side right above the header below the valve cover. then the car turned off. seemed like a heard a knocking noise too, and all this was coming from the driver side of the engine. any ideas what this might be

Wow sound like several problems. Sounds like the electrical system has been eally screwed up by previous owner. The oil leak could be as siple as a gasket or it could be worse. Pictures would help some.
