I'm gradually gaining ground on putting my 76 back on the road. My issue now is when I decelerate the whole car swerves to the right. If I let off when I'm doing 45 it is very noticeable, if I let off completely at 65 mph it is way more than noticeable {seems to swerve about 6 inches}. I've had it at the alignment shop twice to fix squirrelly steering and they tell me everything is ok now.If I decelerate slowly there isn't a problem. I have noticed that the right rear seems to sit lower than the left when parked, maybe related? Any suggestions about which direction I should look?
you spoke of decelerate fast / slow. Are you hitting the brakes? you may have one brake grabbing harder than the other pulling the car to one side. If not you might want to have a different shop check alignment and wear.
I was thinking along those lines after it took 2 trips to get steering straightened out. No brakes involved, they are cool to touch afterwards, it is almost as if the rear end is steering hard to the right as soon as I let off the throttle fast. I have also noticed the rearend going slightly right if I hit the gas hard too.
Did your shop align the rear also? There are shims on the trailing arms that get rusted stuck and some shops might not want to mess with them. Our local shop was honest enough to tell me 'we don't want to replace the shims, but if you do, bring it back and will will align it'. The rear of my Vette does not move to the side unless I break the tires loose.
I may have found my problem today while replacing the rear shocks. The left trailing arm bushing moves side to side about 3/8 " pretty easily. I will order some bushings and hopefully gain some ground. I am disappointed in my alignment shop to say the least, I asked them about all the suspension bushings and they said "everything is fine and tight".....yea right.
Check Duntovmotors.com. They have a DIY for rear alignment. If you want you can set it up yourself and cut out the unreliable shop. I am about to start the same process. Good Luck, mds...
