390 and 400 hp were both the same engine and cam with hydraulic lifters. 390 had a single Q-jet four barrel(68-69) or a single Holley four barrel(67) and the 400hp had tri-power(three Holley 2 barrels). Same engine-different carburetion. Get a corvette Black Book... It's loaded with all the stuff you have been asking. Well worth the price and it will make you Corvette "Savvy"

Yes we are glad to have youngsters interested. I certainly didn't my comment in a derogitory way by any means. I have spent many hours trying to help newcomers young and old. I was just letting you know about a very informative book that is available and is loaded with facts, triva, engine codes, trans code, etc. plus colors, quantities made. I am sorry if my last post came across wrong. :seeya

Larry:
I could be wrong, but weren't the higher horsepower blocks also 4 bolt main blocks? Isn't the 390HP block a 2 bolt main? Just curious.

Bence,
The 390 block is definitely a 2 bolt, but I believe the 400 is also a 2 bolt. The higher horse cars use a 4 bolt.

427 and 454 blocks are the same. A 427 is basically a 454 with a 396 crank. Thats why everyone likes that 427 for more serious racing, much more rev potential.

Sorry SilverVetteMan, I wasn't trying to call ya out:) Just glad he was "into" Vettes. The Black book is way worth the $$$ and I too would recommend it for anyone getting into Vettes.

I've got some books that I'll look in tonight when I get home. I do know that some small block can be drilled and tapped for four bolt mains, others cannot . I am not sure about big blocks though....Later :seeya

I believe that a Big block can be converted to four bolt mains by simply machining the saddles and drilling and tapping the holes.

Bubba is right, I think summit offers the caps - either straight or splayed.

390 / 400 were hydraulic cam 2 Bolt mains,

435 hp were roller cam 4 Bolt mains!

Bence,
No problem, that;s what the forum is for.

Sorry to go off topic a little, but do you have an oil pan already Bence? I bought a new "replacement" Milodon for my 427, but it didn't clear the stock main bolts (with studs for the windage tray). I still have it, and if you would like, we can make a deal. If you do, please email me.

Ken
