Default Head Selection

I have to pass on my LS1 swap as it went well over my budget. So I decided on building the 383 stroker which was my original plan. I currently have edelbrock RPM heads which I have a good feeling are too small for maxium performance gains in my stroker. I am looking at AFR 195 eliminator heads but I am not sure is that is the right choice. Should I get bigger intake runners than 195's with the 383?

I will be running a lunati voodoo roller cam 243/251 @.050 lift. Gross valve lift .560/.565. LSA 110 and RPM range 2800-6400.

RPM air gap manifold, 750 mighty demon carb, 11-1 CR with 64cc head.

I want to spend no more than $1500 on heads so please what do you think is my best choice?

I just bolted on a set of AFR 210 Eliminators on my 383. I am running a solid roller with 242/249 @ .050 with a .609/.615 lift. If you are going to run some rpm then go with the 210s. The 195s if you are running a hyd roller and limit to 6500 rpm. Be aware the AFR 210 heads come with killer springs. I had to put on a less rated spring. The AFR springs are pretty heavy. That added some cost.

With an auto tranny I thought that my 236/242 112 with over .600 lift was about the max cam I would run. When I installed my 5 speed it was then really kind fun.

The rule is: CFM of flow through the heads into the chamber determines the potential power out put. So higher flowing heads can create the same amout of power with a smaller duration and lift cam. A big duration cam with have worse street manners than a smaller cam and higher head flow.

These and my AFR 227's are racing heads and therefore you will be looking at big solid roller cam spring pressures you would probably never run on the street. I like to buy the heads bare or maybe just with valves in this case because they don't use standard size valves anymore.

Unless there is not much difference in price in buying the complete head. Sometimes all the components installed isn't that much more expensive and if you get them with the springs no big deal, you always should be matching the springs to your cam.

I really don't even see how they can sell compete heads with springs unless you get to pick the exact spring you want. I have been through the added expense of buying another set of springs too many times never again

Default ok, not trying to hijack this thread.....

I want to make a 383 stroker out of my 350 ZZ4. Are the AFR 215 heads too big? What AFR head should I use? I want to use a roller cam also. Which one? What springs, lifters, etc.? I am using an Edelbrock 800 CFM Thunder series carb, but thinking about going the TBI or EFI route. Would that change anything? Thanks for all the help guys!

IMO, AFR 195s are perfect for a 383. Enjoy!
