I've seen several members using 700R4 trannys with their SBC's and a few using 4L60E's with their LT1 conversions BUT I have never seen anyone using a 4L60E on a SBC. Is this possible?
I know a 4L60E is essentially a 700R4, but I can get my hands on one for fairly cheap and may decide to mate it to my future L82. Any and all info would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance :).
The 4L60E is an electronicly controlled transmission. I do not think you can use it without the computer stuff. They started using the 4L60E in 93 corvettes. 92's used a 4L60. :nonod:
There are aftermarket controllers available for use with carb'd engines....
some even allow for custom shift point decisions....
not sure about shift firmness though....
they are not cheap however...I think way overpriced, check around though, maybe some one is doing a reasonalbe version by now...
There maybe someone who markets a shift control computer for the LT1. I know BowTie Overdrives has one for the 4L80E. You might wanna start by dropping them a line.

I'm not sure how much is involved in the modification, but I've considered the upgrade to the 4L60 also. I know that Sallee Chevrolet has some information on this. If your serious, I'd give Scott a call in their performance shop. He is extremely knowledgable and could definitely provide the advice your seeking. The website for Sallee is: http://www.sallee-chevrolet.com Best of luck and if you decide to do it, share your results with your pals here on the forum.
Performance enthusiasts who prefer automatics will be interested in this new installation kit for Turbo Hydra-matic 4L60 four-speed transmissions originally installed '92-'93 Corvettes and '93 Camaros and Firebirds. This kit adapts the 4L60 automatic transmission for use in early-model computer-controlled and noncomputer-controlled vehicles such as bracket racers and off-road trucks. It can also be used when replacing a 700R4 automatic with a 4L60 transmission. The kit includes an instruction sheet, a throttle valvespring for carbureted engines, a normally closed Fourth gear clutch switch and a wiring connector for the torque converter.
Thanks all for the help. I will check the Sallee link as well as research the GM part recommended. What you all have been advising is based on the notion of a 4L60E being mated to a carbed-SBC. I will eventually converting to fuel-injection by means of an LT1 conversion or through a mini-ram or DFI unit. So will my 4L60E be okay with an aftermarket PCM?
BTW - the tranny is out of an OBD1 4th Gen F-Body :).
