I want to put power steering on my 69 SB. All of the kits show a listing for a non high-performance and a high-performance pump. I think this has to do with the pulley but I'm not sure. Can someone tell me if that is the difference? My block is not the original but is coded to be of the same casting numbers and I have double hump heads. I'm not sure if that would be the same as the L-46 as far as the power steering pump and pulleys are concerned.
Hi Jim, the only difference that I know of is if its a BB or Sb, the brackets are different, also some high hp solid lifter motors with big oil pans did not have ps.
Thanks for the information. I called VBP today and got the tech dept. The only difference is the pulley. The hypo uses a cast pulley the non-hypo uses a stamped steel pulley. The stamped steel is good up to 400hp.
I'd take a look at the Borgeson conversion. I'm doing my car right now and it's slick! Gets rid of the funky Vette PS cylinder with a much improved steering box and they can provide the correct brackets and pulleys to make it a bolt on deal. Great people to work with!
Looks like this may be the way to go for me. I have installed the VBP front end kit so everything in the front suspension is new. I believe the Borgeson unit will be much easier to install and I won't have to worry about the ground clearance issue.
When I did my Big Block conversion I found DocRebuild had every little spacer, nut, brackets and pulley for an OEM install for all older vettes. The price was good too.
