I'm thinking of buying a set of Allen's 69 style Aluminized side pipes and fiberglass covers. At $620 for the set, it seems like a pretty good deal. First, do any of you have this system and how do you like it ? Second, I'm wondering how the loudness of this system would compare to say Hooker sidepipes ? Any other comments (good / bad) would be appreciated.
Keith. Is that the system you have on yours? Have you ever db'd it for sound? I really don't have any info on this for comparison. I know when we put the baffles in Gdainas 533 we put it beside a 63HP -SB with factory chambered sidepipes, and it was LOUDER than the baffles. But again no figures. Thanks, JCL   :chevy "Sidepipes are the way"
Re: 69 style side pipes - how loud ?? (Black68Vette)
I AGREE WITH BLACK68!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have the same damn burn on my left leg (Amazing it only takes once to learn that lesson). Still waiting on covers to come in and dying to drive the car.
I put 2.5" 69 style with Hedman 2.5" Cerma coated side exhaust headers on my Small block and it made it quite louder than the old 2" standard exhaust. But I like it...it sounds like a corvette now /bg/
The 69 stlye muffler pipes are loud and very restrictive. I would not go with the standard 69 muffler pipes unless you need to for restoration reasons. You can get better performance per db by using other mufflers. If performance is not an issue then they are ok.

I have them on mine and I don't think they are loud at all. In fact I was disapointed that they are as quite as they are. I don't have many miles on them yet so I hope they get louder once they are run a little.
I agree with Pete...I do not think they are overly loud at all. On the highway with the roof off I see no difference in the noise level at all. I chose to go with the stainless rather than the aluminized.
Re: 69 style side pipes - how loud ?? (John Cassidy)
I have the original style side exhaust and covers on my '69 and I don't think they're loud either. They have a "nice" rumble, but not loud. I can carry on a conversation in the car at cruise, it's a bit louder during acceleration. The weather seals on my car need replacement so I think inside noise will be reduced when I get the doors/windows sealed. The the covers protect your legs from the hot muffler.
I can't see how the side mufflers can be very restrictive. There doesn't seem to be much between the inlet and outlet other than distance and open pipe. I've run the car with no mufflers and didn't think wide open was TOO loud either. Loud, but not TOO loud. It'd set off car alarms as I drove through the neighborhood. FUN, pure FUN.

Re: 69 style side pipes - how loud ?? (John Cassidy)
Any sidepipe will be loud. If you feel you must have them I would suggest buying the covers and building your own mufflers. You’ll be looking at a 2600 buck exhaust system, but it will be first class.
