Does anyone have any tips, suggestions, info., on rebuilding a stock distributer? My tach doesn't work and it appears to be the main shaft, not the cross gear. While I'm at it, I would like to optimze if possible, different spring maybe? Appreciate any info!!!!!
I haven't rebuilt a point distributor in years (I assume yours hasn't been upgraded to HEI). What usually wears in a point distributor is the upper bushing. This is due to the constant side loading and unloading caused by the spring force of the points. The bottom bushing doesn't usually wear much. Since they're cheap I would replace both. I haven't looked in a long time but I'm sure they are still available. Also, inspect the point plate for wear of the plastic parts and the advance weights, springs and bushings.
I put in a new main shaft and Cross gear about two weeks ago in mine...Bought it from http://www.tld-corvette.com/main.htm They sell everything that u need.....Heavy duty mainshaft for 40 bucks and cross gears are 20 bucks...Cheapest ANd Best that I have found
DC,
Very pretty car you have. I have rebuilt twenty five of these in the last year or so and i have found generally it`s the lower bushing that wears.Move the lower gear sideways to check for play then the top where the rotor attaches, sideways play at either end is bad. If you need parts such as a shaft and side gear try http://www.tld-corvette.com they seem to have good prices. I have found a source for lower bushings (at a reasonable price) but not one at a time the shipping is more than 10 bushings costs.Have someone competant press them in. We then use a connecting rod hone to fit each one to the shaft it`s getting. There is also a special grease GM sells but the last one got EP grease out of a tube (equally as expensive). ...redvetracr
Dan,
Send a message to Lars, and see about getting his advance kit. It has a new vacuum advance, shims, advance springs and a few other small parts. I just rebuilt my distributor, I my main shaft badly worn, and the lower bushing was worn out. I got a new shaft and lower bushig from TLD and a small parts kit from ZIP. I had the lower bushing removed and a new bushing pressed in at a local AC-Delco rebuild shop. They honed the bushing to match the shaft and pressed in the new bushing.
The distributor is like new! It is smooth and tight, I cant wait to get my car back together to see if it makes a difference in my performance.
