Default Holly Carb Identification

Hi,
I need some help identifying a holly carburetor. The car is a '71 LT-1. The carb has the following numbers

3989021
LIST 4801-1
2678

The first two numbers make sense to me...i believe these are correct for a '71 LT-1. The bottom number (according tovPrince's 68-72 restoration guide) is supposed to be a date code; first number last digit of the year, second is month of production, and third is week of production.

So that would mean the carb was from a '72?? But if that were the case the top number would be 3999263 for a '72 LT-1. It doesn't make sense. Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Paul

Thanks. So it sounds like it is the original carb; which is what i was hoping. Anyone know what the 2678 code represents?

Your right about the 2678 as being the date code..3 digit codes were used up untill 72 then 4 digits became the norm.i,m just guessing here but your carb could have been a dealer/GM Replacement that was produced in 72 however it is correct in every way for your 71..I,m sure you will get other replies sorry i,m no expert, this is just a guess..

Thanks for your help. You must be right...i didn't realize they switched from 3 numbers to 4 in 1972. It appears to be the right carb, just made a year later than the car. I'm assuming the "2" represents the year, still not sure what the other 3 numbers are. If anyone else has info please let me know. Thanks slapshot 496

If it was made a year after the car that would make it the correct replacement carb, not the original carb, right? The only way it could be the original was if Holly had already made the numbering change before the car was built. Was the car a late 71?

car was built March '71...so i'm thinking correct replacement carb also. Something must have happened to the original early in the car's life.
