Maybe Someone should give General Motors a call and ask them why they installed them on all manual steering C3's as well as countless of millions of other chev products.
I have a 1974 AIM and it doesn't mention a steering dampener, only power steering, although my book How to Restore and Modify your Corvette 1968 - 1982 does mention that the Corvette has inherent vibration problems that a dampener will minimise.
I didn't know that the manual steer cars had a dampener fitted as standard, as my '74 has power, soon to be replaced by a Borgeson box. I would imagine that an aftermarket integral power box will act as a dampener without requiring an extra one.
I'm not very good at this cut and paste stuff but if you look in any of the Corvette parts supplier catallogs and look up the steering system you will see that for the manual steer cars there is a dampner. Ecklers, Corvette central, Corvette America.
For the power steer cars the power steer ram is the dampner and doesn't need a second one.

Don't take it that I'm arguing with you (or GM). Just making the point that I've had manual steering with no damper for ages, and w/o issue. If I ever run into the problem I'll most certainly deal with it, one way or another. Otherwise, I'll stick with the old addage, "parts left off weigh nothing and can't fail" in this particular instance. Your results may vary...

maybe someone should do his homework BEFORE posting because you are incorrect.

Your right I dont have a 68 convertible and there isn't a steering damper as part of the steering gear and there isn't a GM drawing from a GM parts book in the Ecklers, Corvette America, Corvette Central C3 catlogs showing this part. I guess I do really need to have my glasses checked.
I stand corrected, I made it all up

FWIW, I can't find any reference to a manual steering damper other than with '63-'68 #3955521 manual relay rods, and '63-'76 C2/C3's with the #3955512 rod simply didn't utilize them. Apparently, no '69 and up C3 came with a damper. Perhaps the only 'vettes that might have presented steering vibration issues had the small rod...
