Default Carpeting compartment doors!!

Removed the three door compartment butt'y tonight. Except for a few areas of rust and minor cracks, it is restorable. Need advise on how to remove the carpet panels on each door. Looks like they are tucked under the plastic frame that goes around each door and there are some sort of plastic rivots or pins in the sides. Has anyone experience with redoing these?

Can't really help ya, just offering a suggestion. I got mine from Tom Dewitt, a supporting vendor. New frame, new carpet and all screws/pulls. Just have to transfer the locks. May be an option, he was giving a deal to forum members, the price was right too.

Both my outer compartment lids had been used to mount speakers leaving bloody big holes plus the frames on all the lids were either cracked or split.
All I did was remove the frames and repair them with fibreglass and then made up new lids out of MDF....Craftwood might be more familiar to you. I did need to route a groove around the outer edge of each lid so they sat properly, but overall it was an easy and cheap fix.
Btw, the carpet I used was the stuff they cover speaker boxes with from your friendly sound retailer. It may not be an exact copy of the proper carpet but who cares? You'd have to be very close to tell the difference. Hope this is of some help to you.

My carpet was glued to the doors. I think the frame is attached by melting the pins that you see. I carefully drilled the pins to get the frames off, but broke the frames in the process. Old plastic isn't very forgiving. I bought new frames & the screw kit when I replaced my carpet.

Drill the pins out, easy to do as they are usually aluminum. the plastic rims should come off (be careful they break easy). bThe carpets have probably been glued on so pull them back. Use small screws in the holes left when you drilled out the rivets. Not a big deal, those rims may be stuck in a place or two and crack when you take off. Not real expensive to replace those.

Another suggestion. Buy your new frame and after you remove the old carpet and BEFORE you glue on the new carpet check the panels and make sure they fit the new frame. I had to do some minor sanding to make sure they fit. Just lay the carpet on the panels clip on the new panel farme and check to see if all of that fits the new outher frame. Good Luck.

I was able to cafefully cut around the plastic frames with a razor knife and remove the carpet without removing/braking the frame. Glued the new carpet on with a small amount overlapping the frame, trimmed the edges and it looks perfect. But ya gotta be carefull, those frames are delicate.

Thanks for all your input. I just tried to drill out the plastic rivots and it seems to work. I completed one door, the center one (smallest) and was able to remove the carpet. Will glue new carpet and maybe fill in plastic rivots with body filler or epoxy.

If you do end up replacing the frames, be very careful putting the new ones in. As has already been pointed out, the fit won't be perfect--in fact the frames will almost certainly be a little too small because the original plastic lid material was hot-molded into the old frames. You'll likely need to grind off some of the material, and if you don't and try to push the new frames on, they'll crack in a heartbeat. Don't ask how I know this.
