I was driving home from work the other day in my 77 and realized I couldn't get into 3rd gear. 1st and 2nd worked as normal. When I got home I tried to back out of the garage, and it just sat there.
I've done a little reading and I think one of the clutch packs will need to be replaced since 3rd and reverse share a clutch pack. Am I on the right track here? I just want to make sure that I haven't missed something easy before I pull the transmission for a rebuild. Thanks.
You're correct.... 3rd and reverse share a clutch pack. Reverse also has a secondary set of clutches in the rear of the case but ineffective with the drum clutches shot. I could also be the reverse high clutch drum is grooved where the oil sealing rings ride, not uncommon on a high mileage trans.
