Default AFR 195 Rocker Studs

Do any of the studs go into an intake port?

AFR says to seal them but I looked at cylinders 1 and 3 intake and exhaust studs and neither goes into anything but its own hole with a bottom to it. I don't want to continue if they're all the same. THX

I sealed mine, but only on their recommendation. Great hardware! It woke my stroker up big time.

Yeah I love mine too.

I'm just fighting on oil burning issue and one possibility is I didnt seal the studs when assembling. I couldnt remember what I actually did but can see now I used anti seize on the threads.

Then I found it strange that so far 4 studs dont go into anything. But before I close her up I want to confirm no others do. AFR is closed all weekend so can't call and their lame website doesnt show if they do or don't.

Intake vacuum can suck some oil, not the exhaust. AFR heads end up with oil puddling above the stem seals. which in my case led to oil burning blue smoke with less than 2000 miles on the motor.

You have to mod the head for better oil return and install better seals PC seals work best.

Thanks G.

I'm going to get to those possibilities next. I was hoping the studs would actually all be going in the intake ports so my problem would have been simple to solve.

Still would like confirmation.

Some old thread history points to 195's NOT going into the intakes. Just want to hear from someone new otherwise I'll button her up in about 4 hours from now.

I would Motorhead but then I have to reset the valve lash on my solids which is a pain and takes a few hours. I'd rather get the car back on the road.

Practice makes perfect. Other than getting the valve covers off and the plugs out the setting and checking is a small job

moving on.....

Trying to solve this oil burning that shows up with high deceleration engine braking smoke. I know that should be valve seal leakage but the AFR's use the latest technology Nitron seals. I guess I'll have to do a leak down test first to check rings. Hate these kind of problems that can't be traced directly.

Smoke is even both sides during decel almost mosquito fogger type.

Can't notice it during city driving though. Engine runs like a beast so no serious malfunctions. Quart every 300 miles.

Update: AFR tech guy says there is no one answer for 195's because castings can be different and some could have holes into the intake while other don't.

Guess I'll be checking them ALL afterall for POM. You guys were right.

i think you should look else where for the oil consumption aside from the heads and valve seals....sounds like a lot of smoke and could most likely be rings or intake leak...as far as the studs, if you used never seize, that should shield the threads from oil, if indeed they are in the intake ports ...jmo..good luck...

my 195's had holes through the intake passages....caused mine to smoke since I forgot to seal them.... the bottom edge of intake to head gasket can also suck some oil

Pull your intake off and reseal it.

Click on my name, in the pic there is a set of 210s, look closely at the port on the right... Stud comes though, doesnt hurt anything. I ground it flush just 'cause. I dont see how oil could get sucked through there not saying it couldnt happen though. never heard of the pooling issue on the Eliminator heads either

Is it safe to assume that pre-installed rocker studs on heads from AFR were sealed? Assuming they went through?

Should I remove them all and check then seal? If so, anyone know the torque setting?

From AFR Website:

"ROCKER STUDS ARE INSTALLED FOR SHIPPING PURPOSES ONLY! THESE STUDS MUST BE SEALED AND TORQUED DOWN BEFORE RUNNING ENGINE."

I didn't see the torque spec. but I recall 60 ft/lbs.... you should call them.
