Default Steering column won't reach into coupler now?

I just got done replacing M/C and booster. While the M/C was out, I had the steering box rebuilt. Also, "while I was in there" I replaced my key cylinder in the steering column and fixed various issues behind the dash. So, the whole dash was out too. When I removed the driver dash, I pulled on the column a little to get some space. I also dropped it a little and loosened the 2 fasteners at the firewall. I never removed it though. Now I am reassembling everything, and the steering column won't reach into the coupler far enough. Its short about 3/4 of an inch. Based on a Jim Shea reply to another problem, I am afraid I collapsed the shaft into the column somehow. Any other ideas, tips, or advice?

BTW, the car is a 73 with tilt/tele column.

I recall reading that you can pull it back out with no ill effects, but it is very hard to do so. Maybe somebody else will chime in. I think I read this in a post about using a Jeep box conversion.

Default 73 steering column

You can pull the end of the column out farther if you need to. It probably got bumped in a little while you were working on the car. Just put some vice grips on the lower section and tap the vice grip with a hammer, it will move back out. Have done this on a 73 and a 80 while installing the Jeep steering box.

Yeah it was collapsed, and I got it out using pretty much that exact vice grip method.
