I keep hearing the "drop base air cleaner" all the time. I have a standard 14" Chevy or GM type that has some drop but maybe there is something the drops more over the carb. Can someone direct me to say Summit, Jegs or a Vette parts catalog for the deepest drop that works. Thx
I have a 1 1/2" drop base on a GM 350 HO crate with a Holley carb under a stock '80 hood with just barely enough clearance. I can't use an air cleaner stud with a wing nut. My air cleaner lid is held down with a 1/4" stainless steel flat head machine screw.
Have any of you experienced any clearance issue with the throttle linkage using a drop base air cleaner?
The shape of the bottom of drop bases vary quite a bit I don't have any throttle linkage clearance issue with my combo, but I had bought and returned a different drop base for that reason.
Check out Universal Spinners, they make all types of drop base air filters. tThey have a web site, seach on universal spinners. Not expensive and custom fitted to your application.
I have a drop base air cleaner I will sell you (just the bottom). It is about 2- 2 1/2 inches. I switched carbs and spacer so i don't need it any more. dangoodva@yahoo.com
I bought an off set aluminum dropped based air cleaner base off of ebay for $15. The off set clears my distributor and the drop gives me approximately 1 1/4" clearance between my filter top and the hood liner. The off set works well on my q-jet carb. I don't know about any other carb.

GM drop base I believe is the lowest available, OK with Quadrajet and Holley DP (just!) - as soon as you use 'billet' throttle brackets its too high and interferes with base - I ended up using the less radical Edelbrock drop base - but had to use a 2" air filter instead of 3" to get clearance with BBC/Air Gap inlet?L88 hood. Used air filter 'top' cover to replace lost flow with 2" filter.
my 71 ls-5 uses a 2" spacer in between the carb top and drop base air filter. does everybodies have this spacer? i don't think the drop base will clear the linkage of the q-jet without it.

The factory air cleaner for your LS-5 is a dual snorkle with a chrome lid. If you are having to run a spacer with your drop base, it is not the right one.
mine has am old chrome top like the ls-6 had. it has a spacer like the chevelle ls-5's have. thinking that's why it sets so high
No spacers on Corvettes. The hood clearance on a Chevelle is much higher than on a Corvette. The Corvette air cleaners are specifically designed to fit under the factory hood without interference to the accelerator linkage or the hood.
I am surprised you can fit a 2" spacer between your air cleaner base and the carburetor without hitting the hood.
I bought a Morosco drop base air cleaner. It's aluminum. Cost a little over $30. I only use the lower (bottom) cover and use the stock air cleaner lid. The air cleaner looks very stock. I have a ZZ4 in my 68 and I got the drop base to lower the air cleaner a little to fit under my stock 68 hood. (Don't know if it was really necessary though).
