Default post your rear spring heat shield solutions.

i just installed my vb&p rear composite spring and it is really close to my 3" exhaust. maybe 1 " clearance. looking at header wrap for the pipe and some reflective heat shield attached to the bottom of the spring. anyone done this and can post some pics. i will post some pics tomorrow but the pipes are wider than the original and do not go under the diff anymore so my original heat shield was useless and thus removed. 1971 bbc

thanks,
gerald

I had the same problem and fabbed a new heat shield from light guage sheet metal that was wider than the original.

i thought about that. i am leaning towards header wrap on the exhaust and an aluminum foil heat reflector material (like a starter wrap) but not sure how to attach it to the bottom of the spring without effecting it's performance.

I use clamp-on exhaust heat shields where clearance is too close for comfort with my 3" pipes.

i used header wrap on both the exhaust and spring. after a hard run, i can actually grab the pipes. little warm, but i dont burn my self. the spring is only as warm as the ambient temp.

mysixtynine you did a great job. that is more than i need, but real nice job. going to get some header wrap from advanced auto. another user, do you think just the zip ties will hold it on the rear spring. not real sure about putting a steel band over the moving spring

I don't think it gets that hot way back there, I have had two broken composite springs and they both broke / cracked near the ends no where near the exhaust pipes.

I do wrap my spring with reflective tape and then I put electrical tape over top ( I already know I may have defeated it's purpose somewhat ). But I check the electrical tape and there is no visible sign of any heat damage on the tape ( reason why I put it there and also the same color as the spring ).

i think i picked up a 50 foot roll from jegs for like 40 dollars. been on there for about 2 years and over 1500 miles. everything is still in the same place i put it when i zip tied it on.

those zip ties were only supposed to be a temporary holding piece, but seeing as theyve done so well im not going to touch them.

you can probably get away with 30ish feet, 2" wide. i had to wrap about 2-3 feet of my front pass pipe as the tach cable was laying directly on the new pipes. didnt feel like melting that cable.
