Default Engine Rebuild Questions....

So I am in the midst of my winter projects including my engine rebuild. I have gotten a lot of great feedback thus far from my old posts:
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-t...tion-long.html

I have a few follow-up questions based on some other posts I have read recently.
1) Do I need a wear plate such as this one from Jegs?
http://www.jegs.com/i/Comp+Cams/249/201/10002/-1
2) I have found some "true roller" timing chain set-ups on Jegs and Summit as well. Is this marketing or something I need to buy specifically for my build-up?
Thanks
Shane

When installing a roller camshaft you need a method of controlling forward and aft movement of the camshaft. This is done in older blocks by the use of a cam button that is shimmed to limit this movement by controlling the clearance between the cam button and the timing chain cover. Several timing chain sets have a torrington bearing or brass bushing that keeps the cam gear from wearing on the front face of the block. A roller chain is an improvement over a stock type chain. A true roller chain is better but IMO is partially a marketing ploy.

Bought the Cloyes cover with the button built-in but looks like I need to get a new timing set as well. Is a torrington bearing the same as the thrust bearing?

Would something like this be it?

OK. Here is the one I think I am going to order. Any opinions? Will this work on a 73 now going to roller cam, etc?

That will work, here's the one I got for my 427ci, it has an encapsulated torrington bearing to prevent block wear

Thanks. After looking a little more, I ordered this one instead.

Has your block been line bored ? That particular timing set is .005" reduced chain length to compensate for a line bored ( don't get confused with honed) block, you won't get it on. Better see if you can change it to a normal one if your block hasn't been line bored.

Will call this AM and cancel that order. Both of these would appear to work as well although I am not exactly sure why one is twice the price of the other:

EDIT - Upon closer inspection of the pics, the more expensive one has adjustments to allow for timing adjustments on the cam wheel.

So would the other one be ok? This is my first engine rebuild and I am paranoid it is going to blow up in my face.
Thanks
Shane

If you go with the Cloyes w/Torrington bearing, the black side of the bearing goes against the gear. That tid-bit is not included in their instructions. I had to call Cloyes to find out.

That's explained in step 5 of my cloyes instruction sheet.
