I have been putzing around the 69 I bought and noticed there is no kick down cable for the tranny...I assumed it has a 350 but then again perhaps it's a 400...okay I admit I do not know which it is but it's an automatic....
Now I know this car did have a blower on it in the past would that be a reason it would have no kick down...my dad disconnected his KD on his Avanti because when it kicked down he didn't like how hard it "kicked"
I haven't driven my 69 yet and have not took a good look at the tranny but I wanna be ready to fix this no JD issue....what should I look at and pictures would be a big help.....
It should be a 400 and it would have an electronic kickdown at the gas pedal.
Very interesting....my dads car, an Avanti 2 runs a 400 SBC and 400 Auto tranny and his kick down was an odd beaded chain hooked to the carb linkage...so I assumed either way this 69 should have a kick down cable...

so where do I look for this kick switch on my 69?
TH400 has a wire going to the drivers side of the tranny. The switch is above the acellerator pedal. It has a pink (ign switched) and an orange (to tranny) wire going to it.

Many thanks!
FYI, from what I understand, it is not a good idea to disconnect or not run the kickdown on the tranny because it effects, to some extent, shift points, line pressure and kickdown. It might damage something.

Greg.
I spoke with dad today...the bead chain I recalled on his car ran to an electric switch...so my confusion done there,
I was under the impression the kick down doesnt happen except at WOT...or close to it.
My dad bought his Avanti about 28 years ago and within that first year disconnected the kick down and while I am no way a tranny expert it has not caused any issues in the car that was and still a daily driver.
With puttering around type service you may never miss the kickdown on a TH400. It is nice for low HP engines to give you a little kick. I don't think it will damage anything not to use it, many don't work anymore anyway. Now, a 700R4 or 200R4 without a TV cable will be damaged almost immediately. That may be the other posters confusion-but that is a completely different kettle of fish.
In the case of my dads Avanti he made a few bad choices back 20 plus years ago,
He had the car a short time and wanted more low end dig, so he had a tranny shop install a shift kit and what he calls a "cut" converter and lower first gears...which I didnt know upi could do,
The car isn't fun for me to drive the throttle pedal is "twitchy" seems you barely get on it and it sqwaks the tires,
So one time in the rain he is turning and the kick down goes in and he spins around 180 into oncoming...he got way lucky and went home and disconected the kick down saying it doesnt fix the problems but helps...
