Default Steering column wiring connector

I have a wiring issue at the steering column connector. 81 vette.

Seems like a previous owner had an alarm system installed, and the black wire was cut.

What I have is the black wire coming down (G - Position) connected to the relay. I don't have continuity from The bottom end of the wire to the top of the steering column.

The wire for the horn (black wire) was cut close to the fixture. There is about a 1/4" of wire sticking out.

I tried to install a sleeve to add a length of wire but it's to close can't get the tool in place to squeeze the sleeve.

Question, how are the wire fittings mounted in the column connector? I can see the wire going out the top end of the connector.

Can the connector be removed so I can somehow replace the Bk. wire?

Can I bypass the connector and just connect the wire coming out of the to the wire which comes out of the top of the steering connector?

Gee long post, just tried to explain what I am looking at. Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Pepe Griffo

PS. This was going to be a 3 or 4 month project. It's going on about 20 months. It is going to be beautiful when done.

Pepe,
I think that this is the information that you require.

Use the wire from a heavy paper clip and insert it into the "harmonica" connector from the contact side to disengage the horn wire and contact in the "G" position. There should be a small molded square channel in the connector that will guide you to a metal tang on the contact that holds it in place. Once you depress the tang and pop the wire and contact out of the connector, you should take a small knife blade and bend the tang back out so that it will engage the old connector correctly.

You should be able to bypass the "harmonica" connector for that connection. It will just make it a bit more difficult in the future to service your steering column.

Good luck,
Jim

Thanks Jim, Appreciate the help

I got the fitting out, it came out in two pieces. Popped the connector off the column bracket. I was then able to get a good view of the connector. Took the top portion off and then removed the pin.

As I noted above the spade portion broke from the part that held the wire. To repair it took a metal sleeve and soldered it together. I will fit it to the connector tommorow.

Again thanks for the help.

It's been awhile since I had one of the connectors apart so I am going by memory (scary), I believe Ron Francis Wiring may have that small brass female connector in packages of 8. In the past I may of even found them at PEP Boys or Autozone.
Visit the web site and scroll down to see if it's a match.

Hey Pepe,

I could not find any of these connectors at the local autoparts stores and ended up buying a pack of 50 online. PM me your address and I will mail a couple your way if you need them.
