You didn't mention your year so solutions may vary. There are two plug in the wiper valley, cowl area. One on each side of the car. You can remove the plugs and use a tool to trip the latch. Since you haven't practiced ahead of time you have to do this blind or find a Vette of the same year and see which way to move the screwdriver.
Early C3's I think up to '72 don't have the plugged access.

Thought I'd share my experience on this- I was unable to use this method [plug access] to open my hood ('76), but I was able to reach hood release cable by reaching from under the car. My forearms still sore from trying to pull the cable as well as rubbing up against some parts. Here's the surprise conclusion to the story: it hasn't worked yet. Also, I've been unable to gain similar access on the passenger side, only the driver's side. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

My 71 has the plug on the passenger side but not on the driver's side. GM put a little wedge shaped recess on the driver's side. You have to remove the grill to get to it. The picture should give you all the info you need!
