I was putting some spark plug stands in my vette, that mount off my valve covers, and i switched some spark plug wires accidentely. Then when i went to correct this problem i corrected the wrong spark plug wires "now 4 pistons arent firing!" Now i know which ones to correct, but before i correct them a guy that i work with started pulling out wires like he knew what he was doing. to make a long story short, my vette is out of timing and i have to pull a spark plug and adjust the crank accordingly! sounds like fun, any tips or suggestions are welcome! :mad :reddevil
Re: got spark plug wires mixed up oh boy! (Dr_stingray)
lemme see if I can help...do you remember the #1 spark plug position on your distributor?? If so, start there, using the firing order, go clock weise(firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2).
as for the cylender locations, #1 is the front piston on the drivers side, and #8 is on the rear of the passangers side. So it goes something similar to this
REAR OF MOTOR(where cab is)
8-7
6-5
4-3
2-1
FRONT OF MOTOR(where fan is)
Its important that you know #1 position on distributor....(mine is just to the left of the center line of the crank on the distributor cap(on the front of the cap)

that was our problem, we couldnt find the number one spark plug wire, dont ask me how we got this mixed up because i dont know myself, we think my distributor is turned 180 degrees, but believe me i tried 3 or 4 number one's and none of them worked or they did work but my timing is already gone to hell! but thanks for your help.
Re: got spark plug wires mixed up oh boy! (Dr_stingray)
well you have to find top dead center, with the distrbutor out, then with the cap off, turn the rotator so it faces the #1 cylender, THEN drop it in, and put the cap back on, and where the "pin" is on the cap, thats your #1....
You can find TDC (I hear) by placing your finger over the #1 spark plug hole(with the plug removed), and you can pretty much tell when the cylender is to the top, as no more air will be pushing aginst your finger...or something....if not...off comes the drivers side head. :)
