My 68 is a Corvette. It is a convertible. It is not a vert. With the optional hard top on her, I'm not sure what she becomes other than a helluva good looking lady.
But I'm still pretty sure that's where the term comes from...
Before I owned a corvette, I refered the rag top as convertible or roadster. Now that I have a convertible, I use the term, "vert" when writing a discription on a form or something. For me, it's not like I can't spell or being lazy. If you use the word rag top, convertible, roadster or vert. everyone kind of knows what your talking about if you own a corvette. If someone gets upset over whether the term is used correctly, that way too much brain power wasted.
...How are they referred to in the NCRS manual?...
Convertible or convertibles.
Allen is also correct on his "roof panel" point.
I understand the term "vert," I choose not to use it. I usually don't use "Vette," but I understand the origin of the term.
No big deal. I can remember when there was no C* designation for anything. There were Classics, Sting Rays (or Mid-Years), and Sharks. We can thank the C4 for the origin of the C* stuff.
Alas, life was simpler then.

I bet there are some out there (not me of course) that will use the term "vert" from now on just for "sh#ts and giggles"
I could understand this discussion on the C6 forum but not here. After all, years ago I remember a C5 or C6 forum where there was a discussion with numerous responses on the proper way to wash a car!!!
In the archive in my memory,I always believed that a roadster was a car that had a removable top but no roll up windows, only side curtains as on old MG's ,Jaguar, and other sports cars. 32 ford roadsters were windowless.I always call my car a convertible never a vert. ragtag
What, no T-Tops now? No Vettes, no Verts, no frame-offs, no frame-ups? How about matching numbers? But Sharks is o.k? How about Flat Tails? You don't hear that too often.
Methinks we are all getting a little testy waiting for spring! Actually, my biggest buggaboo regarding car ads is when I see the term "needs restored". Grammatically, it should either be "needs restoration" or "needs to be restored". Ah, I feel better now,
yup...... it's been a long cold and wet winter here. I never thought such a question would generate more responses than any of my mechanical questions. I suppose cabin fever is setting in. At least here in south Louisiana i am able to drive my "vette:.........i mean corvette in the winter.
