Anyone know when the converter should lock-up on an 82. Just had my tranny done and there is a shuddering in 3rd and 4th gears. Mechanic said this was due to motor mounts being worn out and motor sagging slightly, so when the converter locks up you get the shuddering. Sounds like BS to me .....
Also is there a way to force converter not to lock up ?
What you are explaining is correct, but i'm not sure you have much control over when it locks or unlocks as i'm pretty sure that in 82 the torque converter lockup is controlled by the ecm. You can maybe unplug the switch to disable the lockup, but that won't solve your problems forever. If you do, I think the switch is loacted somewhere under the brake pedal.

You can unplug the trans to keep it from locking up all the time.
You could also wire in a manual switch to lock it up on your command in anything other than low.
On my '89 Jimmy K1500, I have a controller from B&M. It puts a sensor inline with the speedo drive and will lock up th TC at any speed from 30 on up in all gears except low controlled by a small box in the car, adjustable as you drive. If your TC seems to "hunt" in and out of lock this will prevent that.
Oh yes, been there as well. While driving to a local car show one Sunday,
my 82CE started doing the same thing. I pulled in to a local gas station
who does alot of tranny work, and the owner poured what's called
"Shutter Stop" into my tranny. It worked immediately and never shuttered
again. That was about a year and a half ago. Pretty good fix for around
6 bucks :yesnod:
