I am in the middle of a bigger job than I bargained for, but I know I'll get through it with some help. I'm having a heck of a time removing the strut shaft that the shock goes on (it's is on the hub side of the shaft that aligns the camber). I'm pretty well stuck at this point. Tried to heat it up, pb blaster etc and tried my best to get it out with no luck. Any pointers on how to remove that little monster? Also, any pointers on removing the torque arm would be appreciated. I can hardly wait to get after that. The whole spindle assy is original and I'm glad I'm digging into it now. It's pretty dry in there. The other side is next. I've had the car for about 6 mos and drove it about 200 miles and then it got noisy back there. Thanks for any advice.
I would stop right now and pull the rotors off. It just maybe the parking brakes that were making the noise. The hardware tends to rust away to nothing.
Thank you sir. I would stop if I thought that was the case. The car has over 120K and nothing has been done to this hub. Unfortunately I'm sure the bearings are shot (stethoscope confirmed). The camber strut bushings are toast as well. I'm assuming the torque arm bushing is trash as well. So the assy is going to come off, one way or the other. I'm looking for any tricks to getting the torque arm out. I'm pulling the strut at the cam bolt today and then going to get the torque arm wrestling match going. I don't have an oxy/acet torch to get the heat I need to get the strut shaft out at the spindle. Once I get the assy free I can get real heat on it at a buddy's machine shop (and replace the bushings on the strut). Then off it all goes for a rebuilt spindle assy/w torque arm.
Fortunately the front suspension rebuild is complete. Once I get the rear tight she will be close to the paint point. The engine is new (w original heads and block with a couple add ons) and strong, the trans is tight and all drive shafts are in great condition. I really scored this ride at a fair price and it's coming together nicely.
If you do not use one of these: along with a 5lb sledge (a regular hammer is a waste of time unless you're just trying to get some cardio done) it will be nearly impossible. If you do try it by beating on the mount without the knocker firmly bolted on, then you will also need two of these as well:
