Default FASTBURN 385

Well, you guys have helped me a lot on making plans and decisions on my upcoming make over of my '80 Vette. Thanks to everyone that has given their opinion or information on all of the many questions I have asked.

We've covered the radiator, trailing arms, wheels, tires, crossmember and now to the biggie............the engine!

What do y'all know about the Fastburn 385? does anyone have one?

I can see that it is basicly a ZZ-4 with different heads, but the horsepower and torque characteristics show to be somewhat different. The comp ratio is also a little less and that may help in the future with gas the way it is.

I really think I will be more pleased with it knowing that "If it ain't got the get up and go I want." I can always bump it up to a 430 horse with the cam and rockers. One other advantage is the heads have the ability to use the outbord bolts like my L-82 valvecovers do, so I can reuse my own stock covers which I would like to keep.

Any other information or need to know's would be appreciated. JIM

Just put a FB385 in my street rod. Runs very strong. I like it alot. If any of your accessory brackets bolt to your manifold now you will have a problem as the FB intake manifold does not have that mount. I needed to replace my accessory brackets to use the intake that came with it.

Basically, it is the ZZ4 with aluminum Vortec heads. With the installation of the LT4 Hot cam and 1.6 roller rockers, they get it up to 430 HP. The one thing you will notice is that the FB 385, although it had higher peak HP, it has lower peak torque than the 355Hp ZZ4. However, I do like the idea of 430HP also.  :smash:

I have a copy off a ZZ430 long block and was able to use the stock 74 valve covers by using extra thick ( double gaskets bonded to a steel shim) gaskets.

Default 79MakoL82...

79MakoL82--Hey, I just had a question for you!...First off, that is a NICE car you got there! :) Ok, I was just wondering about your exhaust and cats...I think that my car is old enough now that New York won't care about the headers and stuff on the car however I think they will still require the cats at least to be on there...I was just wondering what cats and type of setup you have on the '79 to do the true duals but keep the cats?...Do you have headers too?...Thanks for any info!...

:)

Default FASTBURN 385

I installed the Fastburn 385 in my 69 convert. and I love it! With the cost of machine shops and parts it was too good a deal to pass up. I was a little woried about buying a factory crate motor, but so far I have been very pleased, including the paperwork the factory sends along with it. I used the March pulley system, (beutiful workmanship!) Hooker super comps, and a Holley 700 DP that I had left over from one of my boats.

I have not yet had it on the chassis dyno yet as I am waiting for my new hood that I ordered from Vanacors. Future plans call for a manifold swap, maybe a different carb, then cam and rockers, just to see what the dyno says.

If you are going to use a crate motor, I strongly suggest the Fastburn 385.

Sorry I didn't respond earlier. Been out of town for a few days.

First, thanks for the compliments on the car. It's amazing what fuzzy pictures will do for you. :D Actually, it's visually in pretty good shape, but needs a few things.

In terms of my exhaust, it's got just the standard rams horns manifold and a modified 74 style dual exhaust. The pipes were cut just behind the tranny crossmember and the cats were welded in. They were on it when I got it and are ready for replacement. In Florida, I have no more need for cats, so when I replace, it will be without cats. The standard 1974 2 1/2" dual exhaust and hangers will fit. I'm struggling with whether to go with headers or not (If I can raise the money, I will probably go with the headers). However, with the placement of the cats behind the crossmember, that should not cause any problem with headers.
