I am about to undertake a chore that could be a turning point in my Vette's life. If that rusted exhaust manifold bolt doesn't come out of the head, and breaks off "inside" the head, this Vette will be down all summer for mods. I have a procedure that a machinist recommended. Heat it red hot, let cool for a minute, then soak with Hydrolic brake fluid (hi boil point) let cool. Do this three or four times. Expansion and contraction should break the rust bond. If it doesn't work, and I have to pull the head... well.. these old heads are NOT going back on .. meaning... IT'S MOD TIME FOR OL' SYLVIA!! I do want to drive this summer, and mod next winter.. sooooo... we'll see!!
Sorry. I feel your pain. There's another really good penetrant/rust buster product I've used ... a spray can of stuff I recall the name is "PB Blaster" I think? Best of luck.
good luck....but I prefer you to mod it anyways since Your '00 formula allready flew the coupe !
I found a bolt busted off in my old factory heads...thats what lead to mine !
but just think how purdy she could look with shiny new stuff !!!
good luck man !! spring is coming soon...hurry the hell up !
:seeya
yeah man the hot wrench always works for me. then spray with penatrent let cool a little first as when you spray with the penatrent it smokes like crazy, no fire just smoke :smash: remember to keep the garden hose or fire extingsher handy just in case good luck
Good luck. The heating will help. If possible, meaning you can get enough room to swing a weighted object, like a hammer, try to shock the bolt after you have heated it up. Shocking will help to dislodge the bonding between the two metals. Any type of penetrating oil needs time to work, so be patient and make multiple applications of the oil, so it can wick its way into the threaded area.
Just did this with exhaust manifold bolts... on my truck worked like a charm.... then I broke a bolt in the head when botling them back in-- the old bolt was split halfway through, but I couldn't see that until it was too late....... No exhaust leaks so I left it alone for now.
