I have got a crack on the muffler where the exhaust pipe goes in to it. I took it in to the exhaust guys near me and they had a look and said that they could weld up the crack, but they were surprised that there were no "flexies" at the manifold end, or another part which I cannot remember the name of, which is a pipe between the two exhaust pipes which compensates the pressure between the two pipes as each side of the engine fires. I know that my exhaust system is not original, and I have never seen under a vette before so I just dont know what it should look like. The exhaust guy is not familiar with vettes either, but thinks that there is a lot of pressure on that weld at the mufflers with no flexibility in the system at all. Even the engine "tilt" when starting would put pressure on the whole system.
Another question is how many tail pipes did the 76 have? Mine has 4 which are clearly not the original but they look super-cool. I would like to keep the car as factory as possible, but again I dont know if the car should have had 2 or 4. Can someone please advise and some photos that I can show to the exhaust guy would be good too.
The stock 76 cars had 2 pipes. There was a single exhaust going through 1 cat converter and splitting at the rear axle into 2 pipes. The "flexes" the yare talking about are not there. Even the factory systems were welded all the way back on the dual exhaust cars on the early C3 cars.
I think you are talking about an H pipe. This connects both sides of the pipes to even out the pulses and make it somewhat quieter. I have aN H pipe on mine but mine is a custom system which is removeable also. I had it made this way for easy removal which I'm glad I did since I have had it off a lot.
