all the lights on the outside of the vehicle work when I pull out the headlight switch, but none of the dash lights or dome come on. how can I bypass the switch to find out if I need to replace it or something else.
You could run a hot jumper wire to the fuse box inst lamp fuse and test the lights there. Also you could pull the dome light and run a wire from one side to a ground or a 12v source, not sure if the circuit is completed by grounding the light or adding 12v.

Same thing happened to me, the dimmer part of the switch was toasted.. So new switch..Good luck...
This is the dimmer part at the front of the switch. If the retrostat coil breaks close to the end none of the dash lights will work. You can replace just that part but the labor to get the switch out is the same so replace the whole thing.

Grounding the white wire should turn the the dome on.
