Default how do the t-top latch sensors work?

Just realized the t-tops both have a sensor that can tell it when they are unlocked/out or locked in.

How's this work and what's it do?
I thought maybe it was a warning system to tell you they weren't locked in so one didn't fly off, but I don't see how it would know the difference between them being not latched and not even in.

It looks hi tech for the time.

Thanks, that makes sense.
Considering someone moved the horn to a push button switch I'm going to guess mine doesn't work.

The horn and the alarm horn are in different places too.
