Default Timing gear/harmonic balancer length-2

Hey everyone... update. In the original post (2-24-10) I mentioned that I didn't think my balancer and timing crank sproket were on all the way after replacement. Mastr Fab wrote that the balancer hub to end of crank should be about 1 & 1/8" (Thanks Mastr Fab). Fauxrs (11-30-09) commented on improperly seating the crank sproket and wearing out the timing set, plus the gear being recessed in the back for the crank fillet (thanks fauxrs).

My question is: Should the crank sproket go all the way back to the start of the fillet radius and sit against the radius. My crank has a step-up, or ridge (only a few thousandths high), about 1/8" before the start of the radius that the crank timing sproket sits up against when fully installed (can tell by the swipe marks in the grease that the sproket is sitting fully up to the ridge). With it installed up to that ridge and the balancer fully pressed on to the gear, I wind up with 1 & 1/32" from balancer hub to end of crank snout, not the 1 & 1/8" noted above. Plus to line up the power steering belt I now have to shim out the pump by two 3/8" lock washers.

I just don't think the sproket is all the way on even though it was pressed on as far as it will go. Does anyone have a measurement on how far back from the end of the crank the sproket should sit. Mine sits at about 1.310". Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

BTW, crank gear and balancer hub are exactly the same size (width and length) as the OEM ones I had taken off. Oh yeah, 76 L48. Thanks again.

On my L82 it is 1.306 over the crank, 1.220 fram crank and out. Think you are good.

Thanks aremar2, just don't want to spin this thing up and have a timimg chain go out on me. I'm assuming by 1.306" "over crank" you mean distance from front of crank timing sproket to the end of the crank snout installed and 1.220" "from crank and out" as outer face of hub of balancer to snout end of crank installed. Just don't know why steering pump is all of a sudden out by that much.

Hello. 1.306" is from crank snout (inwards) to end of crank. (Measuring the witness marks on my old original damper.)

Thanks again aremar2. I was sittin' and thinkin' about my 1 & 1/32" distance from front of balancer hub to the crank snout and what Mastr Fab said about it usually being around 1 & 1/8", thinking mine isn't on far enough, and then it hit me that if my measurement is 1 & 1/32", then my balancer is pressed on the crank even more than usual. So I feel pretty good about the timing sproket being fully pressed on along with the ballancer but now I'm at a total loss as to why I had to shim out the steering pump to align the pullys. Unless it was that far out of alignment to start with and I just didn't notice it. Bought the car with a wiped out lobe and just started tearing it down after about 20 miles. Had to drive it... couldn't wait for a cam change... until I put one of the pushrods thru the rocker on the bad lobe. Oh well, 1 cam, 16 lifters, 16 pushrods, 16 rockers, a new timing set and a ton of cleaning and other parts replacement and I'm almost there.
