Hi have a '77 auto and just went to get it out of storage (been sitting for about 4 motnhs) and when I turn the key it fires up fine but the ignition sticks in the backmost position and you have to manually turn it back a little so that the grinding noise stops. Any ideas? Is this more likely an ignition problem or is the flywheel going bad? Previous to this I have never experienced even the slightest problem with this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. ....and please forgive me as I'm quite naive on things such as this. =)

Keep doing that and your flywheel will be going bad.
Sounds like it is in your column since you can return the key to stop it.
Might just be the electric ignition switch itself or any of the parts on up the column.
My 75 is doing the same thing, I'm just going to pop out the whole column, clean, repair whatever, grease and reinstall.
Last one I did, someone had been in there before and screwed up lots of stuff.
They work really well after freshening them up.
To snoopykissedlucy "Little Spring"? Can you be any more specific?
Also, does anyone know of any good website/literature that shows detailed pics of the column internals, etc, or that has a tutorial on a rebuild/freshening? Thanks Again
Here is how to get to several papers on disassembly & repair of a 1977 Corvette T&T steering column.
