Default FRP or SMC body panels?

Quickie...what year did the Corvette's start with the SMC panels?

Lars & Butch's article on this forum state specifically that the SMC panels started appearing around 1981, but weren't standard until 1984.

However, Eckler's sells their fiberglass repair materials that are for "1953-1972 Corvette panels only." They are "NOT formulated to work on 1973 or later Corvettes with SMC body panels." For SMC repair materials, they carry products from Fusor and Adtech.

So, to repair my original '76 panels, which bonding adhesive should I use..the type for FRP or SMC panels?

Thanks,
Kurt

Call Ecklers and tell them you have conflicting information and ask them to cite their source, explain etc., you also might give your local Vette club contact a phone call.

and please post your findings. I'm guessing Lars is correct . . .

An early form of SMC was first used on later production 69s on the doors. these were made of a material called Genite. Panels were continually substituted throughout the next few years untill 1974 when all panels had been changed to SMC. The first so called true SMC panels are said to be used on 1971 rear quarter panels, but It is difficult to tell any difference in these and the earlier Genite panels. As the years progressed more changes in the SMC materials have occured untill they are very hard to bond with anything but epoxy products. Much if not all of the newest pieces are now bonded with epoxy or urothane products.
