Default power window rebuild help

Hey i have a 1980 with a power window problem that is bugging me.

The driver's side started acting up, only going up and down at will, then stopping altogether.

So i assume a bad switch. Took it out, checked it and it was fine

then i pull the interior off the door, check if juice is getting to the motor, it is.

Assume its a bad motor, hook it directly up to a 12v battery, it works just fine.

Checked the ground on the motor, no problem there.

Lubed the heck out of everything there was, ran it up and down a lot with the external batt., hooked it back up to the car power, No dice

Still will not work at all, not even budge with the car on and the switch.

I am thinking that maybe the (nylon?) rollers are messed up and need to be replaced. Maybe the extra amperage from the battery on jumper cables vs whatever is going through those little wires is helping it out.

Is this the case? Is it possible to inspect these without a bore scope? If so how big a deal is it to remove all the power window stuff, and more importantly how hard is it to put it all back together? If i do pull everything out should i replace the spring when i am at it?

any other suggestions would help

thanks,

Steve

IS it the power window relay? Maybe it is not making good connection and has high impedance not letting enough juice flow. Or a bad connection some where else?

Mine did the same thing. Focus on the switch and ground.

Try running a secondary ground off the motor. I would run it all the way to the battery just to check. If it works using the cars power and switch then your problem is a bad ground. If thats the case find a good ground in the door somewhere. Keep in mind the motor grounds to the door but the door grounds to the cars frame then there is a common ground on the frame...so on and so forth.

OR

I went through several switches. Eventually I got frustrated and opened the original one up. You can do this by gentle bending the tabs back on it. Once in there rebend the contacts....they flatten over time.

Pulling the insides out of the door is not hard. I would avoid touching any of the window alignment bolts....they are a pain to reset once played with. Everything comes out of the access port.

Check this thread for a picture.

Leave your VOM connected while trying it, my guess would be relay contacts breaking down under load. Connect meter across contacts on relay, should be no voltage drop across contacts even under load. If you get a voltage reading between in and out, you have a bad relay.

Check the gears, they maybe shot. Also the large spring tends to weaken over the years. Also, check the rollers in the tracks. I bought a rebuild kit for my 81 and the window operate really well.
