Like many others the clock in my Vette quit working. Being thrifty (read: cheap) I saw that you could buy a quartz rebuild kit for about a third of the price of a new clock. Having never repaired a clock I was a bit aprehensive if this is something I wanted to try. I went for it. I took pictures throughout the rebuild and posted them on my website. If anyone else needed to repair their clock I encourage them to save some money and go with the rebuild kit. Whole job took me about 2 hours.
The previous owner installed a new quartz mechanism in my Corvette just before I bought it. It's performed flawlessly for almost 8 years now.
Even though I doubt I'll need to replace mine anytime soon, I just wanted to say thanks for posting the "how to". How Tos are the first thing I look for when I start thinking about a project and I'm grateful so many out there have documented their work :yesnod:
My clock has only worked for about an hour in the last 6 years. I read in a post a while back about the
uses of WD40 and I thot what the heck it doesn't work anyway I can't hurt it. So I took the whole
assembly out of dash and popped out the clock and after figuring out how to get at mechanism
gave it a very liberal dose of WD. Put it back together and reinstalled cluster in dash. Well that was
sometime last summer and it's still running and other than making some adjustments after installation
it keeps almost perfect time. It's scary. Steve
Something that you might want to try on your broken clock before you spend money rebuilding it.
My clock had never worked in 6 years. While doing r&r on my gauge console, I took the clock out and sprayed it down with WD-40 - It started running! It wasn't even powered up. I guess that the spring had been stuck in the wound position for many years. I blew it out with air and re-installed and it has been working ever since.
