Default Degreeing Cam and Adjustments

So I started trying to degree my cam last night and, in preparation I bought a new timing set from Summit that has additional advance / retard keyways on the crank sprocket:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-G6600-B/

In my initial go through I found my centerline to be 104 degrees and recommended centerline from comp cams is 106. So then I used the keyways on the crank timing sprocket to retard the cam my 2 degrees (using the marked keyways and new timing marks). I then reassembled everything aand went through the process again and found my centerline was now 104.5 degrees / maybe 5 degrees.

The instructions with the timing set read that the keyways / timing mark on the crank sprocket should properly adjust the cam (ie the 2 deg retard on the crank timing sprocket should have gotten me to a 106 deg centerline.

What is more likely? I messed up the process / measurements on the initial check? Or that the keyways dont indicate camshaft adv/ret?

I am going to run through the entire process again tonight but wanted to check in with the forum today and see if there was any helpful insight since I have never degreed a cam before.

For more background, here are my other recent posts on the buid-up:

Thanks
Shane

when you re check your marks, i would suggest to use the largest degree wheel you can find...i would not retard the cam to meet the 106...install it straight up, as the chain stretches ( and it will) it will retard the cam...good luck..

If your coming out 104 to 104.5 thats fine, with all your valve train hooked up you will probably loose a degree and 2 degrees advanced should be fine.
