Hi All, enjoy the forum. Have lurked for a long time but never posted. But I'm having problems with my '82 CrossFire. It tends to idle too high for a long period before it settles down to the proper warm temp idle speed.
I have changed the idle air control motors. I have scan for codes. I replaced the thermostat and checked that the engine is running in the 190 degree range.
The car will cold start and run fine. At warm up it will settle down nicely to normal idle speed. But get in it and drive it and the first stop sign/light you reach and it's back to around 900-1000rpm. If you're willing to sit there for about 2 minutes it'll settle back down. It really sounds like a temperature problem. A sensor maybe?
Any suggestions? I can't think of anything else to try?
Mine does almost the same thing. It's been that way for about 3 years. I don't worry too much about it. The car runs fine other than that. There is a cross-fire forum that takes you thru the steps of drilling out the cover for the idle adjustment screws on the throttle bodies but I don't have the link.
Does it do this even after it has been driven 15 or 20 minutes? I have TBI on mine, almost the same as cross-fire except both injectors are in the same housing. Mine will do this same thing occasionally for about the first 10 minutes as it warms up.
Thanks for the reply. It will revert to high idle speeds every time I come to a stop. If I sit still for a few minutes it'll idle back down. If I turn the engine off then restart it'll go to high idle. The time lag is just long enough that it's too long to sit and wait for it to idle back down.
The only exception is when I put it on the road for an hour or so, say on the interstate. When I do that it seems to work just fine for the rest of the day.
Sounds like the car is going back into open loop. Two things to check make sure you are running the correct tempreture stat for the car. The other is the O2 sensor If the car has a sigle wire O2 sensor and it is black the wire color that means it is the original and has never been replaced. Replace it!!!!!!!! not just witha napa or pep boys brand either go to the dealer and get an acdelco or the local auto parts and buy AC Delco O2 sensor There is a difference I see it all the time. :smash:  :seeya
Thanks. I'll try that. It is the original. The car just rolled over 40,000. I did replace the thermostat and verified I am up around 190 degrees which is where I'm told it should be.
