What headers are you using with the '69 syle sidepipes?
I am leaning towards the Hooker, but have been recommended the Dynomax as well. Would like to know what you are using and how satisfied are you with their performance and ease of assembly.
Re: What headers are you using with the '69 syle sidepipes? (gdh)
Heddman and Stahl are the ONLY headers I know of, other than custom, that will fit up to 1969 "factory" style side pipes.

Re: What headers are you using with the '69 syle sidepipes? (MassVette)
I am using the Heddman headers. They fit nice and there is a lot of clearence for the spark plugs and wires, straight plug heads. I notice a big power increase over the stock manifolds. I must of gained 30 or 40 HP.
Re: What headers are you using with the '69 syle sidepipes? (gdh)
So, if I understand this right, the Heddman and Stahl headers drop down and turn hard outside to the rear of the front tire? Ooooh, that's what I want! Any pictures of this installation? I'm drooling already!
Re: What headers are you using with the '69 syle sidepipes? (Wrencher)
Found the Stahl headers at http://www.stahlheaders.com they are expensive at $700 - 760, the Hedman are much cheaper, but would like to see pics as well.
Re: What headers are you using with the '69 syle sidepipes? (gdh)
I'm using the Hedman's Cerma Coated 2.5" through 2.5" pipes thanks to the rec from Ken73. Little trouble installing drivers side, but some careful manevouring and good vocabulary work out fixed it ;) . Very pleased with extra power over stock ram horns and 2" exhaust.
Here's the part numbers for both coated and uncoated...they have a 5yr warranty...the only negative is they're only coated on the outside....whereas if you bought uncated and shipped to Jet Hot...they do both in and out.
From Hedman....."Use part # 68280. (69286 coated). (s.b. w/side exhaust). They are 1-5/8" x 3".
For pricing and purchasing information, call your local
speed shop, or Summit @ 800-230-3030, or Jeg's @ 800-345-4545.
Thank you for your interest in Hedman products."
I ordered mine from Summit.....and here's was there prices last July:
Hi there. Our complete part numbers and prices for the headers your are
requesting are as follows.
HED-68280 HEADER 99.95
HED-68280-6 HEADER COATED 283.95
Thank you for you interest. If you would like to order these parts, you
can do so online, or by calling our sales department at 1-800-230-3030.
Please do not attempt to order through e-mail, as that is not a secure
site for credit card numbers. We look forward to hearing from you.
Re: What headers are you using with the '69 syle sidepipes? (ZORA_RULES)
Btw....I still had to cut the Side Pipes, and take the car down to the muffler shop (through open headers :D) to weld up an extension so the header and side pipe would bolt up the guy only charged me $30 for that...don't know how to weld myself.
Re: What headers are you using with the '69 syle sidepipes? (ZORA_RULES)
Yea, I found the Stahl site as well. Nice! 'spose the Heddman price for BB (PN#68210) would be similar? Also, one of the footnotes indicates that they are not recommended for aluminum heads, which I had considered. Is that due to port design? I really need to see a set...
Re: What headers are you using with the '69 syle sidepipes? (Wrencher)
GDH...no prob...if it weren't for Ken73 helping me out with my similar post....I would've probably went in a different direction. Which I'm certain they're are others out there....I just liked the design/price of the Hedmans.
Wrencher....sorry, I don't have a Digital Camera yet :cry. But these pipes make almost like an S curve if you looked at them from the side. The collector sits right under the frame behind the wheel well on my car (so it twists back out at an angle, unlike block huggers or something else). There were several other guys running these besides Ken73 when I posted last summer.
Re: What headers are you using with the '69 syle sidepipes? (ZORA_RULES)
my .02
Headmans are cheap headers, better than Ramhorns i suppose but VERY unequal length. This means that you will notice a drop in idle vacuum and more dificulty tuning the engine.
I built my own side exhaust headers and the turned out very close to Stalhs, there is just no other way! Oh, and it would have been cheaper to buy Stahls headers than to make my own now that I add up all the materials!
The stals are MUCh better headers and definitly worth the price if you have spent ANY money on your engine.
Re: What headers are you using with the '69 syle sidepipes? (427V8)
427 - nice web pages and pic .. did you get that stripe put on yet, I have a similar one on my sb hood but needs to be redone as a stone cracked it literally in the middle and it now looks like hell. Are those stick stripes if so where can theybe bought.
Re: What headers are you using with the '69 syle sidepipes? (gdh)
Greg, Here is a picture of the Small Block Headman side exhaust header.
These are my old ones. I replaced them with new headmans in '96.
These are made to fit the stock '69 side exhaust.

Re: What headers are you using with the '69 syle sidepipes? (gdh)
gdh. I have a picture of a road race Vette using Stahl headers. The collectors are 3.5", along with 3.5" sidepipes and baffles. These would also work under 69 style covers but only the fiberglass ones. ( you STILL have to "fit & adapt" them though......) The "REAL" metal covers have to much BS behind them holding everthing together to get anything but the chambered pipes behind them. Or you could just eliminate the factory covers and have just the sidepipes with the Stahl headers. You can special order 4" collectors and sidepipes also. I've got a customer doing this set up right now. Will try and POST this picture. Thanks, JCL   :chevy "Sidepipes are the way"
Re: What headers are you using with the '69 syle sidepipes? (gdh)
Thanks gdh...
This is the year to start paint, who knows when I'll finish it...
I'm pretty sure I'll be painting the stripe on

Re: What headers are you using with the '69 syle sidepipes? (gdh)
Here is the reply from Stahl that I promised:
Greg,
Our headers are painted with a silver 1800 degree paint. It stays on
quite well (doesn't burn off) but is a paint not a ceramic. We have an
arrangement with Firecote in CT (800-491-7382) who will coat a Stahl
header for $150. However once the coating is on, there is no weldable
surface. To fabricate into factory side pipes you would order the
header
with a straight extension and buy the curved extension bends
separately.
Then you would fabricate the turn to line up with the factory pipes.
This
needs to be done before the headers are coated. We do not have a
distributor in Canada so you can order directly from us. To determine
a
size, please give us a guesstimate on your horsepower and let us know
your
intended use of the car. Building the headers for the iron eagle or
lightning heads are not a problem. The headers would be built
specially
for your combination so we can build for almost any cylinder head you
decide to get. If the cylinder head is higher than a stock head, we
would
have to build the header as a step header to make an adjustment for the
difference in height to insure fit. Production time is currently about
10
days.
