If I set my initial timing at 12 btdc, and then readjust it to 16 btdc, is that ADVANCING the timing?? Since by going to 16 (in this case) the spark is occurring earlier, correct?

Yeah, as the name suggests, it's the point in crankshaft degrees before the piston reaches Top Dead Centre that the ignition is fired. So by making this figure bigger you are advancing or 'bringing forward' the ignition event.
