What do you think about replacement water pumps, New or remanufactured? if so where is the best place to buy whichever one you would reccomend? for a 79 L-48
waterpump , Stewarts is the one I choose. It came with a lot of good recommendations here. http://www.stewartcomponents.com. The have 4 stages. Stage 1 is cast iron, 2 is cast aluminum or polished, 3 and 4 are for real hard racing use applications. They recommend a high flow(balanced) thermostat with there use.

I like the Weiand Team-G pump in aluminum. It's light and well machined and the one I got about 7 years ago has run for about 80K miles now with nary a lick o' trouble.

I'll back up what Noel said about the Team G racing pumps. I've seen tests in Car Craft and Hot Rod and the Weiand Team G pump always came out on top for mechanical versions.
How about if it's not for a high performance application? And Hay there Ram82fire, I'm down by the Philly international airport. Your out by Phoenixville right? I'll be waving at ya now ! :yesnod:
I don't know if your engine is stock or not. Mine is a long ways from being stock. I was having cooling problems last summer and thought I would go with a higher volume water pump. I purchased the Stewart Stage II pump along with their recommended 180 degree thermostat. This alone cooled the engine temperature about 25 degrees. Since then I have added Spal 11" fans and knock on wood, the cooling problem has gone away. Yesterday I drove about 70 miles in 50 degree temperatures and the temperature never got over 185 degrees and this was in city driving when it reached that temp. On the highway, was in the neighborhood of 175 degrees.
You can visit their website and then go on their message board and ask questions. Their rep, I believe his name is Jack, will post an answer to your question within a few hours, that is during their normal business hours. Also, can read post from others, very informative site and good people to do business with. Don't own any stock in company but wish I did.
I have a brand new stewarts stage 1 i'll sell you for $50 plus cost of shipping. I was planning on changing my waterpump but my dad refuses to help me, so I won't be doing it... let me know if you or anyone is interested.
I got a flow-cooler and it lasted about 6 months, so I wouldn't recomend that brand.... Any body use an integral electric?? I was thinking one of those with a couple large electric fans might be trick since both could be run with the engine off.
Metal Wulf, replace the water pump yourself. Buy a repair manual for your year of Vette and follow it closely. If you take your time, it should not be a problem and it would build confidence in your repair abilities.

Metal wulf ,, listen ck427 is giving you good advice , besides there are a lot of people here and in the ne forum that can talk you through the job. It is a very basic procedure !
I'm glad you guys had good luck with your Stewart water pumps, I didn't. The stage 2 that I bought blew out the gasket three times. I installed a Edelbrock aluminum and haven't had any problems.
I was kinda afraid of the added water pressure damaging the heater core. Plus I want the water pump to look totally stock, Does the Stewart cast iron pump appear as the GM stock pump does? I kile the way they build their pumps, but I wonder if I should with a GM new pump? Any Ideas?

Dittoes on the Weiand Team G ... I recommend too ... they're solid! Note: they do NOT have the small bypass hole at block flange on passenger side ... racers don't want it ... street probably won't need it or want it either.

Thanks guys... We're going to do the radiator in a few weeks, but basically he said if it ain't broke don't fix it... I figured since I got to rip everything apart for the rad anyways, might as well replace timing chain and waterpump... do it all in one shot. But he doesn't want to mess with it cause they're still working. So at least I'll have a new rad, hopefully I won't overheat anymore... I'll save the waterpump/timing for this winter, so I can do it and take my time.

Electric water pumps are for drag race use only. They can not keep up with the demands of stop and go driving with the A/C running in the summer. Also, an electric water pump and dual fans running will require a higher amp alternator and will kill the battery in 2 mins. running without the engine.
