Default Exhaust manifold question --454

I have a 72 454 non A.I.R., with A/C and Auto trans.

I see that the right side is the same for 454 and 427.

The left sides are different for 68-69 and 70-74 big blocks.

I am removing headers from the engine, so when I go back to regular manifolds I will have to go to the muffler shop and have the engine pipes remade.

Does anyone know if it is possible to use the 68-69 Left side on my car?

I wonder why they are different? Maybe changed for extra clearance around the starter, or other maintenance issues?

Thanks

I think I just read this, the way it turns at the end is the difference I think. One turns in a little, one turns out?

I think you have your left and right mixed up. The right side (passenger side) is the starter side and is the same for 66 to 74. The left side (drivers side) is different for 70-74. The earlier manifolds had a bit of a kick out at the bottom and the 70-74's are almost straight.

I don't know why the difference and can't say for sure, but I suspect that the earlier ones will fit your car. Hopefully someone with first hand experience will chime in.

Yes, I was wrong about possible starter clearance problems, since the starter is on the right side.

I've been looking at pictures that I found, and it looks like the 70-74 LH side turns out slightly, and the 68-69 looks like it is almost straight.

I'm willing to use an earlier one, but wonder what kind of clearance problem I might have.

Since I'm having new engine pipes made to fit, maybe I can get away with using the (wrong) earlier LH side.

I see you have a 71 LS5 also. You could get a good idea on clearance issues by peaking around the driverside on that car. I don't recall anything being in the way on mine.

Does "fastcw" have anything to do with radio?

Tom--Yes, fastcw refers to my ham radio hobby. CW is morse code operation, which has pretty much gone by the wayside with digital comm these days.

Thought so. I do about 98% CW work myself.
