Local Craigslist offers a "1981 Z-28 aluminum intake"; part number appears to be 14014432. Is this preferrable to the cast iron L48 intake on my 77 engine? Thanks!
Unless 14014432 is a casting not a part number these two manifolds are not the same. My interest is in the Savannah listing which is about a 40 minute run from here. Assuming the local guy is correct, was this a 350 or 305 car? Does it matter?
It is a good intake. I am actually looking for one for my 76 to keep me legal in NCCC class 2 c/d. It was the only intake to come on both the L48 and L82. It was also used on the 305 motors.
I believe most of the aluminum intakes from 78 up are pretty much the same except they changed casting numbers.
So to answer your questions, yes it is preferable to an cast iron. It flows more and is lighter. The 14014432 is a casting number. The intake was on both 350 and 305 cars so it doesn't matter what it came off of, it will be the same intake.
The aluminum intake will only save weight. It will not perform any better, as far as airflow, than the cast iron Q-jet intake. Nothing changed in the design other than the material. There are versions in casting numbers for this intake but they are for variations on the choke.
Be careful to verify the intake is not weeping coolant due to degradation of the aluminum material. My orig intake from my '80 L48 started leaking coolant near the rear coolant passages (adjacent to the distributor). I had to apply 'marine tex' (white material, similar to bondo) in two places. Later, I replaced the intake with the Edelbrock Performer #3701 which is a direct replacement for the OEM low-rise intake.
The 14014432 is lighter and probably looks better unless somebody painted it, like mine (1980). I won't spend the money to buy one, go for an Edelbrock. Somebody on the forum must have a 77 with an aftermarket intake that can tell you your hood clearance. Do you still have the stock air cleaner?
Thanks gents. The weight savings alone made it attractive. People in this area seem to think any ratty, corroded water outlet boss POS Edelbrock's gotta be worth at least $150. If this intake is still around on Saturday I'll probably be taking a ride to look.
Edelbrock Performer #3701 fits under the hood and stock air cleaner without issues. I did find that the location for the vacuum port that drives the power brakes is VERY close to the rear of the carb but otherwise, fine.
The #3701 is the emissions legal (EGR port) intake.
If emissions is not an issue, the #2101 is $128 at Jegs. This is an outstanding price for an intake manufactured in the USA.
Jegs also has the #3701 Performer intake for $162 before shipping/handing.
I saw a good deal on the #3701 on eBay; $75 + $18 shipping. But, be sure it isn't damaged.
What about the Edelbrock 2701, is that a good intake?
It will also fit under a std. car
With stock air cleaner? I can't find the height measurements for the 2701. Strange, Jegs offers it for the 2101 and 3701 but not for the 2701 or for the Vortec intake.
What I have for the 3701 and 2101 are (A) 3.5" + (B) 4.6"
Where:
(A) is measurement from block surface at front of intake manifold to the top of the carb pad on the intake (where the carb would bolt to)
(B) is measurement from block surface at rear of intake manifold...
Dividing the two numbers by 2 yields a 4.05" avg height which is either very close to or equal to the stock intake measurement for my '80 L48.
Edelbrock's installation instructions for SBC intakes says only the 2101 and 3701 fit under the stock hood (I am assuming with stock air cleaner).
I just installed an edelbrock performer eps intake (2701) with an Edelbrock 1406 carb, and the stock dual snorkel air cleaner worked with plenty of clearance. i used a holley .2" gasket/ spacer between the carb and air cleaner. Oh yeah, i have a 1979 L48.
