When I went to a ministarter I purchased one for a 92-96 LT1 vette. They came from the factory with a ministarter, and it's a great piece. I think it was like 90 bucks and it was in stock at my local carquest. Word of caution, though. If your local parts place has to order it be careful because some places (like autozone) list several starters that "fit" the 92-96 vettes and they throw in standard SBC starters as replacements, not the correct one. Might wanna go armed with the part number for the correct GM one and see what it crosses over to now.
I've bought three ministarters from the General Motors Performance Part catalog. They appear to be of good quality and I've had no problem with them. (2 ministarters for a SB and a high torque ministarter for a 502 that I plan to build). Actually, I got their part numbers from the GMPP catalog and actually bought them from Summit.

I've had no problem with them Well actually one of the ministarters exploded. I had a problem with my 68 ignition switch. When you turned the key to "start," a spring in the switch should place the key in the "run" position when you release the key. With my problem switch, you had to manually rotate the key from "start" to "run" as soon as the engine started. I once started the engine of my ZZ4 and forgot to turn the key to "run." With the engine running and the starter still engaged on the flywheel ring gear, I blipped the engine to about 2500 rpm. This caused a gross over rpm condition for the starter. The rotor broke apart from centrifugal force and jammed into the stator. Instant destruct. Anyhow, I replaced the ignition and bought the second ministarter.

"State of the art construction make them one of the strongest and most durable Nippondenso gear-reduction starters on the market. Unique aluminum housing eliminates hot start problems. 1/3 smaller, 80% more cranking power (1.9HP), 40% lighter and 50% less amperage draw than stock. 4:1 gear ratio. They offer one of the most versatile header and oil pan clearance adjustments on the market."
I've used the Powermaster XS Torque starter for over 10 years now, and it's still going strong. Kinda pricey, but has 200 lbs. of torque, is good for 18.0 C.R. engines, and weighs only 7 1/2 lbs.
