Default Rear End Problems

I went to get a four wheel alignment today and I was made aware of excessive play in the rear wheels. The mechanic said it was the half shaft moving inside the dif and I would have to get i fixed before it could be aligned. Any Ideas what needs to be fixed before I start taking things apart to see whats wrong. Thanks.

The answer if fairly complicated, really...
it depends on a lot of factors....
posi clutch wear is one factor that may allow the outward movement of yokes, the inward yoke ends also wear against the cross shaft, sometimes tothe point of letting the dust shield grind against the outer housing...
it's nearly impossible to tell much untill the rear is taken out of the car, and completely apart to measure/observe everything, if wear is a lot, the bearings most probably worn badly too....

Gene is correct about what could be causing this movements however, worn clutch packs will manifest themselves in a chattering noise during low speed cornering - if you are not experiencing this then you certainly require replacement side yokes as their tips have worn down inthe manner he indicates.

How much movement are you getting, more or less than 1/8" if more I would say sideyokes definitly.

In either case - there is no repair that doesnt include removing the rear center section to get inside.

The side yokes on my 78 were worn to the point that the snap rings were at the very end of the yoke - see my suspension rebuild page for details.

If your problem was negative camber on the rear tires you most probably have yoke wear. I had the same problem. Badly worn yoke ends.

Just as Fauxrs and the others have pointed to.

It's not a real difficult job, just involved. I took the time to rebuild all of the rear suspension while I had mine down!
