Default getting pwr to dual fan setup?

I have a dual fan setup in my 71' that bubba wired for me , it is wired with two sep wires (one from each fan) to the fuse panel , each one going to a post in the middle of the fuse panel , I think one is to the acc and one is going to the ign post. So basically the fan is on anytime the ign is on. Can I wire the fans together to one post (I need an ign on source for my elec tach) Or does anyone have info on changing my setup to something better? Thanks!

Buy a Haynes Fan wiring kit from you parts store. It comes complete with Thermostat, fuse, relay, and dual fan wires for about $20. I wired mine off of the starter + wire. Works perfect.

Mine is main power comes off of the back of the alt. and the circut breaker is mounted on the left front fender panel. I used a painless wiring kit with a thermo switch.

I used a kit from BeCool with my Spal fans. The fans get power through two relays with the 12V source on the starter (that way the battery handles any on/off spikes). The relays are controlled by a thermostatic switch (mine is in my thermostat housing) that is on at 195, off at 175. Works great.

Definitely use relays.

you can get power from the ignition switch, or a number of sources metioned above.

you can also install a toggle switch so that the fans will run constantly, instead of the temp running up to 210 and the fans kicking in

I built a small panel that holds a terminal strip and relays and fuses and mounted it in the engine bay, there were just too many wires hanging off of the fuse box. I ran a large wire from the starter for direct battery power and a wire from the fuse box for power when ign is on. Then I wired up the fans to that. I need to fab a small cover for it. Now I have a few extra terminals for other accesories (oil accumualtor, stereo amp, etc) as well. I also set up a relay to drive my 150 watt hi beams...

I have the two fans wired in parallel. The only place the wires converge is at the 12V+ sources (starter for fan power and IGN on fuse box to control relays) and at the thermostatic switch. Each fan has its own fuse and relay.

The only danger is if the thermo switch fails, no fan but I would just bypass it for constant use. If I had AC, I would wire 1 fan to the AC solenoid and the other to the thermo switch.

Also, since I am running a 180 thermostat, the fans come on right at 195. I have never broken 200 with this setup. In fact, if I can get on the highway fast enough to get good airflow, the fans will never come on.

Kind of hard to see in this pic, but the yellow wires over the tunnel are the 12V power supply for the fans, the relays are on the firewall just to the driver's side of the wiper motor, and the red wires down the side of the bay are the 12V switched from the relays to the fans. BTW, the red wires at the end of the yellow wires down at the starter contain the in-line fuses.

I have a diagram for possible fan hookup in the tech section at my page.
My fan has been running ca 15min total since I installed it 5k miles ago....
