Guys can you really determine how a cam will idle by reading the specs of the cam? If so how do you do it?I know higher duration numbers is suppose to indicate rougher idle. And also lobe separation.can you explain this to me if you can figure out the idle of a cam.

Without an example it is a crap shoot. But when you know what you have it is easy to make a second or third choice of cams.

I'm a solid roller cam person. My original 383 cam was 232/238 112 and had problems with detonation. So I jumped up to a 240/248 112. Which was a little high strung for an auto tranny. So I went to a custom 236/242 112 in a racing type high lift lobe. Wonderful engine!

MY first 427 small block was a 242/248 110 CompCams extreeme Solid roller. Again I errored on the way to mild side. So I had a custom made. 248/250 110 Just a wonderful motor

Its probably best to 'read' the cam info along with the cylinder head characteristics/carb cfm/inlet manifold/ignition timing/rear end ratio/transmission ratios (if manual) converter stall speed (if auto)/weight of vehicle/intended use/gas quality. All of these factors are just as equally important as the cam 'specs' - however if they are all matched to each other you will end up with an engine that 'sings' throughout the rev band
