Steering column conversion: std to t/t. Anyone done?
Hi,
Theres 2 72's that are pretty sexy, and strangely in my price range. (one at $14K, the other at $18K). Both have fixed columns, and i literally can't drive it without tilt/tele.
Has anyone swapped over columns? New or used parts? Approx cost... given I'm mechanically useless and would no doubt need a shop to do it. (And yes, I realise I'm a fool for considering a 40 year old car with no mechanical mind whatsoever....). Anything that needs to be known or is a fairly simple swap?
Thanks in advance.
I have done it. Not a big deal. The columns are pretty much the same exept the upper portion. They bolt right in. The wiring is the same just tuen the harness over on some of them. A shop wil charge you a rediculous amount because it is a older corvette and something can go wrong. If you were close by me it would take about 2 hours to do. About a 100 dollar job if you have the column. T&T columns for the early C3s can get pretty expensive for a good one.
1969 through 1975 T&T columns along with telescope hardware and horn parts will swap right into your car. (The bare 1976 T&T column will swap but you will have to supply the following parts in order to complete a swap with correct parts for your 1972 vehicle.)
Your current steering wheel will swap directly. However, make sure that you have the special T&T parts, i.e. horn cap, upper contact, lower contact and spring, hub, extension, tilt and turn signal levers, etc (or they come complete with the column).
The rest of the attaching hardware will swap from the column in the car.
