Default 73 L82 Camshaft

How can I ID an original L82 camshaft.? I pulled the cam out of my 73 L82 motor today and I want to make sure that it is the original cam. There was some pink paint on the rear of the cam and some casting numbers but no casting part numbers to go by.
Thanks,

Hello, I purchased a new GM L82 cam also known as a GM #3896962. You can find more info by using the search option.

I'm just wondering the same thing about mine. I didn't remove it. Only the sprocket. It should be a L-82 cam, but there are no casting part numbers either :

Thanks for the info Al. I did do a search but never did find a way to ID the cam I pulled out.
73Streetrace I also read where the stock cam might have a vertical Diamond in the casting. I have no idea if it's true but it might not hurt to pull yours and have a look.
Mine is at the machine shop and I am going to ask them to look for the diamond today.

Thanks for the info.
It might interest me if you know where this diamond is... especially if it's a real one

If your cam is at the machine shop they can put a micrometer on the cam lobes and see what the lift is. The L82 should have .3 on the intake and .306 on the exhaust. Those are the actual lobe numbers. The stock rocker arms end up giving you .450 and .460

Default L82 cam

Hello,I have the cam and no markings on the front face of the cam. There are some light stampings on the rear face which are: 115840 & 371328 and a USA. This cam is a GM L82 that I bought two years ago. Might have different markings on the original? See ya, Al

virtually all SBC flat tappet cams are cast iron and .... they all share the same casting CORE ... universal cores; then lobes & journals ground, gear cut, etc... all I've seen have the diamond which is, I think, the logo for ubiquitous manufacturer-supplier "DANA" ... seems like division was "CMC" ??? ... anyway, diamond don't mean L82 specific.

best bet: measure several lobes.

exceptions to sharing universal cores are some of the 4-7 etc swap cams.

*everything on internet's suspect; including the very words I just wrote.

Here's what Lars told me about the casting markings :

"Camshaft ID markings and part numbers are normally located on the rear surface of the cam - not visible unless you pull the cam out.

Lars"

I have my 79 cam infront of me (assuming it's the original). starting at the end without the steel tip the marking are-on the flat end I have TM30R5 The 'R' is cocked and slightly out of line with the other numbers. the next set of markings are on the shaft two inches down from same end- stamped K1 and on the reverse side#14 with red paint. six inches down - stamped EP-6 w/yellow.From other end (with steel tip) two inches down I have C2 and on the reverse side D2 w/ purple paint. 6 inches down-CWC no paint. Hope this helps

CWC makes camshaft blanks and sells them to all the major cam manufacturers, if you google you will find most people never figure out who made the cam. The best you can do is measure the lobes and duration and decide what you want to do.,
