Default Stripped tooth on ring gear

ok, so how hard is it to remove and replace a ring gear or do I put up with that embarrasing once in a while scream from the starter motor?

Whats easier, dropping the transmission (auto) or engine to access it?

Once out how hard is it to put a new gear on the flywheel?

Thanks, Dennis.

You loosen the transmission and push it back. You dont have a flywheel you have a flex plate and it is serviced as a complete assembly.

You don't need to completely remove the trans, just unbolt the torque converter and the trans and push it back far enough to get to the flexplate bolts.

If you take the spark plugs out you should be able to rotate
the motor and get to all the bolts.

What everyone here is telling you....replace the flexplate with a new one. The damage on your existing one will only get worse with time, and eventually leave you stranded. It's not hard to do if you have mechanical skills

This may be a little of a bubba trick but you can drop the insepction cover below the flex plate turn the engine over until you can see the stripped or broken tooth and put a good weld in the area and file it back to the correct tooth shape.

Yes, this is bubba but it saved us a the track one night. !

Hi Aussie -

Just done this very job myself - and its not a barrel of laughs it must be said !!. Very tight squeeze.

If you search on here for "MrGofaster" you'll find a thread he's posted on how he tackled this job on his car - complete with a video - very bloody useful !!.

Best of luck with it.
